Become a Volunteer Community Curator at Calderstones

Can you help unearth challenging connections between Calderstones and the transatlantic slave trade?

Thanks to players of The National Lottery, The Reader is embarking on a mission to make Calderstones Park a place of meaning making for the whole community.

Working with Laurence Westgaph, an expert on Liverpool’s connections to the slave trade, this exciting new project will dig deep into the Maritime history of the Grade II listed Mansion House in South Liverpool.

Over the course of 20 weeks, volunteers will work with Laurence and an artist to build on his existing research, and develop a new artistic display that will be displayed permanently in the Mansion House so that visitors to Calderstones can gain a fuller understanding of its heritage.

Workshops will take place once a week in the Mansion House. If you can help by volunteering then we’d love to hear from you, please get in touch with us on programmes@thereader.org.uk before 31 March 2022.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people from a black, Asian or ethnic minority background, as we believe it is essential to have the perspective of people of colour at the heart of this work.

Walk & Talk Photo Club

Here's what the organiser, Rob Collier, says about the event.

I decided to create these events for a couple of reasons; I have battled with mental health for most of my life, hitting complete rock bottom and attempting to take my own life. I got involved with a number of groups to help me overcome my adversities and battle my mental health issues, many of these groups held walk & talk events.

These events where great for getting people together, embracing nature, talking to people who have faced similar issues and just to get out the house helped me massively with not just my mental wellbeing but also physically. However, being an avid photographer, whilst on these walks I would always want to stop and take photos of things that pleased the eye, nature, landscapes, animals etc and would find myself falling behind from the group.

This is where the idea of creating a walk & talk photo group came in. A great way for like minded individuals to get together, share camera skills and experience, teach and learn from others, whilst meeting new people and improving our wellbeing by being out in nature and embracing some of the wonderful scenery we have on our doorsteps. These events are completely FREE to all who attend and open to anybody of any age and skillset, from complete camera novices to seasoned professionals, all are welcome.
