Depression is draining.

Depression is exhausting.

Depression can leave you feeling mentally and physically empty, making even the simplest tasks feel completely overwhelming.

It's hard to see a way forward when you're struggling with depression. Motivation, the very thing you need, seems to have flown out of the window out of sight.

If this sounds like you then let's take a look together at practical strategies to help you lift your mood and find that sense of purpose, even when depression wants to keep you glued to the bed or couch.

Understanding what your motivation looks like when you're feeling depressed

Did you know depression has a huge effect on how motivation works? Really! Your brain chemistry literally shifts, making it harder for you to feel the pleasure or interest in activities you once enjoyed.

Here are some examples on how depression dampens motivation:

  • Depression produces cycles of negative thinking which can leave you physically - and mentally - stuck in a rut

  • Depression creates low energy levels, making it harder to get active

So what do you do when motivation feels out of reach? Well, small steps can create momentum. If you can gently encourage yourself to do a small task, one which doesn't require much energy, it will give you that sense of accomplishment. The ball starts rolling from there.

For example, if you're struggling to get out of bed why not set yourself the task of making a brew? Just leaving the bed for a comforting drink seems manageable and can then lead on to other achievements. Now you're out of bed you may as well jump in the shower. From the shower you get dressed and perhaps some breakfast. One thing at a time, broken down, makes everything feel less overwhelming.

Routines are also proven to help motivation as structure is soothing when the mind feels chaotic. With routine gentle consistency is key. Regular wake - up and bedtimes improves rest and supports body regulation. Schedules give purpose, allowing you to fill your day with activities that make you feel productive and proactive. Normalcy creates stability which leads to better functioning. Remember, although a busy schedule can support motivation, it's important not to overload yourself with expectations or duties. A bursting diary can feel impossible to maintain when you’re depressed. Be aware of how much you're taking on and know when it is time to take a break.

It's important to consider:

  • What feels doable today, not what you think you should do

  • Breaking goals into daily or weekly targets

  • Being willing to change goals based on how you feel

This flexibility helps maintain motivation without adding stress.

Be mindful that depression will always be ready to discredit you, so allow yourself some self - compassion when you're struggling. See every small achievement as a big win. This is not only important for motivation but also morale.

Knowing when it's time to see professional support

Sometimes depression requires help beyond self-care strategies. If you find that you are having difficulty functioning in daily life, or you're having dark thoughts, then it's time to seek guidance from a mental health professional.
