Our resident artist Ian Smith has been picking up steam for his latest locomotive piece ‘Sunset Steam’ here he shares the next stages of his art.

Sky.

I've added more colour to the sky to add depth. I'm after a subtle colour of pink in the sky with a combination of yellow and white and blue. I feel a little bit more work will see this come too. It is a lucky thing really that I added the smoke from the engine before I finished the sky, as the smoke did not turn out the way I intended. However, my creative crisis is now averted!

Locomotive and Tender.

I've been working on the profile of the engine, including adding more definition to the wheels and chimney so you can see them better. The steam dome next to the chimney is receiving attention slowly and I’ve made progress on the tender. I've worked on the top section of this trying again to improve the profile.

Coach.

Here I am focused on the roof section as I'm trying to get this looking straighter.

Bridge and River.

I've added the fencing to the bridge top using a fine brush. Also where the coach is I've added a small tree and in regard to the water I've added more white to give a glassy look but more detail will be added.

Perspective.

Now the fencing, tree and more details have been added to the canvas I can see where I'm going with the perspective now. Any adjustments can be made along the way as I head for the finish - touch wood!

I hope you have enjoyed this stage and will look forward to seeing you on stage 4.

Bye for now,

Ian.
